The cities of West Lake Hills, Lakeway and Bee Cave will celebrate the 32nd annual National Night Out on October 6. The campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood watch programs. West Lake Hills Police Department will host its annual open house between 6-8 p.m. Families can meet the West Lake Hills police officers and firefighters as well as tour the police department, patrol cars (including the new stealth car) and fire engines. In Lakeway, residents are encouraged to turn on their outdoor lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Residents who have registered their neighborhood events with the Lakeway Police Department will be visited by Lakeway police officers on Oct. 6 between 4-8 p.m. “Now, more than ever, police across our country need the support of their communities,” Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said in a news release. “National Night Out is the perfect opportunity for our officers and our neighborhoods to come together to an open dialogue about community policing and our crime prevention strategies.” Bee Cave Mayor Caroline Murphy issued a proclamation Sept. 22 declaring Oct. 6 as National Night Out in the city. The National Association of Town Watch launched National Night Out in 1984 as a way to promote neighborhood crime awareness, according to its website. The event can now be celebrated in either August or October for communities across the U.S. The city of Rollingwood hosted its National Night Out Aug. 4. Police Chief Dayne Pryor said more than 200 residents participated. “National Night Out was a success,” he said during an Aug. 19 council meeting. “We got good feedback from attendees. As hot as [the weather] was, that’s a great thing.”
