Round Rock ISD is seeking input on a name for its 34
th elementary school, which broke ground July 28 at 2800 Sauls Drive.
The district expects the new facility, which will help alleviate overcrowding at Wells Branch Elementary School, to open in time for the 2016-17 school year.
At a Sept. 17 RRISD board of trustees meeting, Daniel Presley, RRISD chief of schools and innovation, said the district would solicit public input for name nominations until Oct. 2. Residents can submit name suggestions
on the district's website.
In the meantime, Presley said, each trustee would appoint a member to a committee tasked with developing a name recommendation to the board. The committee’s first meeting will take place Oct. 13, and all committee meetings will be open to the public, he said.
On Nov. 19, the board of trustees will meet to discuss the committee’s final recommendations. At its Dec. 17 meeting, the board is expected to vote on an official name for the school, Presley said.
Board President Charles Chadwell asked if the committee would also recommend a mascot for the new school. Presley said community members vote on mascots and school colors after the boundary lines for a new school are drawn. He said he expected the board to begin drawing boundary lines at its October meeting. Boundaries would be finalized in January or February, Presley said.
According to RRISD, the board of trustees’ policy dictates that new schools may be named for any deceased person of historical significance. The location of the new school may also be recommended as a name, according to RRISD.
The layout of the new 118,324-square-foot facility will be similar to Elsa England Elementary School on Pearson Ranch Road, district officials said. Voters approved funding for the new elementary school in May 2014, and the project is estimated to cost $36.7 million. The district already owned the property for the new school.
In July, Superintendent Steve Flores named Gabrielle Niño the school’s first principal. Niño was principal of Bluebonnet Elementary School in RRISD for four years.
