Stephen Herrera, a last-minute entrant into the race for the Place 5 seat on San Marcos City Council, has withdrawn from the contest. The other candidates in the race are Frank Arredondo and Scott Gregson. “I’m still going to be going out talking to people and trying to get people to go out to the polls and vote,” Herrera said. “I don’t necessarily have to be running to go out and get people to vote.” After entering the race, Herrera, a teacher at San Marcos High School, said he wanted to run to show his students the importance of civic engagement. In last year’s City Council election, which included races for two council seats and the mayor’s seat, voter turnout was 26.3 percent. After filing for a place on the ballot, Herrera said he hoped to improve turnout in the city. “I would like to talk to people and inspire people who haven’t voted in past elections to go out and vote in this election,” he said on Aug. 28, days after filing for a place on the ballot. “If I lose this election but I see that 3,000 people voted instead of 2,000 people, that would be a victory for me because people are now paying attention.”
