New York-based Shake Shack opened its doors in The Domain on Aug. 26 with some local Austin flair. The restaurant, located at 11228 Domain Drive near Macy’s, is the second location in Austin. The company chose Austin as its first destination in Texas. Zach Koff, Shake Shack’s vice president of operations, said he had no qualms about Austinites loving their local brands. “The difference is we’ve made a huge commitment to be a local as possible,” he said. Shake Shack’s two Austin locations feature a Lockhart Link burger with jalapeno cheese sausage link from Kreuz Market. The restaurant also serves local craft beer on draft, including from Hops & Grain, Real Ale and Austin Eastciders. Other menu items using local ingredients include the Hopscotch concrete—a dessert featuring frozen custard ice cream blended with toppings—using Kiskadee chocolate and the Uchi-koncrete made with miso hazelnut blondies from Uchi and Uchiko. Five percent of proceeds from the Uchi-koncrete will support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Austin. “That’s why we’ve never really felt like a chain,” Koff said. “We always come in and try to add to the community with the community.” Just before opening the doors at 11 a.m., Koff spoke to employees, motivating them to have fun as well as “be good people; do good work.” He said base salary is $11 an hour. “When you take care of your people they’ll take care of our guests,” he said. The new Domain location features a large outdoor patio with a bocce ball court and the burger shack’s signature string lights. Visit www.shakeshack.com for more details.
