Wearing white medical coats and moving from classroom to classroom, about 50 Austin ISD high school students began their participation in a health sciences summer camp July 27 at The University of Texas Dell Medical School.
The inaugural camp, which lasts from July 27-31, will teach students who are interested in the medical field during the summer break, AISD Superintendent Paul Cruz said during an opening ceremony. Some of the activities at the camp will include emergency medical services lectures and demonstrations, neuroscience lab participation and CPR certification training.
“The added bonus is that the instruction is going to come from actual doctors [and] surgeons, people who work with patients every single day and do research,” Cruz said.
Eric Chavez, one of the high school students who signed up for the summer camp, said he is attending because he hopes to become a Dell Medical School student after graduating from high school.
Dell Medical School will have its first class of 50 students in June 2016.
A second week of health sciences camp, from Aug. 10-14, will be for AISD junior high students, Cruz said.
The camps are free to students who registered to attend, Cruz said.
