Restore Cryotherapy in the Shops at Arbor Trails on William Cannon Drive opened June 2 offering interested Southwest Austinites a cold-temperature experience for several health benefits, according to managing partner Jim Donnelly.
Inside a circular chamber, cold air blasts a client for three minutes, with temperatures reaching about minus 148 degrees Celsius. Customers wear nothing but their underwear and are provided gloves, socks and slippers, ensuring that the body feels the cold without injury.
“We have success story after success story of people coming in and saying, ‘You know what, I thought it would make me feel a little better, but it helped me specifically with this [problem instead],’” Donnelly said.
This process, called cryotherapy, is part of a health-focused venture by Donnelly, who said he partnered with his father, Mike, to start the business.
Donnelly said he started the company because he and his family members are athletic but are also getting older.
Cryotherapy’s benefits can help not just himself and his father, but also Southwest Austinites with health-related concerns, he said.
Donnelly said athletes can benefit from cryotherapy because the process hastens recovery from aches and pains.
For those looking to reduce wrinkles, the extreme cold can also tell the brain to produce extra collagen because the cold temperature makes the brain think skin is dying, Donnelly said.
The treatment can also make the body burn between 500-800 calories, Donnelly said.
