The project being proposed is located at 6218 Brodie Lane and 3505 Country White Lane, which are both residential lots. An existing house, carport, pool and shed on the property would be transformed into a pub and multivendor food operation, with construction including the addition of an entry drive, an 18-space parking lot, gravel walkways, and a re-irrigation and stormwater detention pond, according to city documents. Sunset Valley Mayor Rose Cardona said as of June 16 three items being considered as part of the motion had not yet been cleared by engineering staff. “Staff and myself recommend that we table this until the next meeting when all the materials have been submitted, and until the engineers and all professionals have cleared everything. … I don’t think there is any reason to think that these items aren’t going to be completely cleared,” she said, adding her goal is to give council members time to consider all the information before taking a vote. This is not the first time the city has discussed the project. Dennis and Anita Dunn opened The Barn in November. The Dunns said they also planned to open a bar called The Pub at The Barn. In February, Sunset Valley filed a complaint in the 200th District Court against Austin Curling Center LLC, which is owned by the Dunns. Council considered the project during its June 2 meeting but tabled its discussion. During the June 16 meeting, Tom King, the Dunns’ attorney, asked the mayor for clarification on what items still need approval so that he can work with the city on clearing those items. “These people are trying to put a business up before next winter comes,” King told the mayor. “It’s too bad they didn’t come to us and submit their stuff initially instead of doing construction without the permits to begin with,” Cardona said. The Barn is located in Sunset Valley’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, an area in which the city’s influence over development is limited. City Council’s next meeting is July 6. “That’s alright. We’ll be back the next time,” King said.
