Fort Bend County is one of 20 counties in Texas eligible for disaster assistance as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes, strong winds and flooding that began May 4, according to the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Disaster assistance for homeowners and renters includes grants to pay for rent, temporary housing and home repairs, and medical, funeral and burial costs. Residents who experienced substantial storm damaged are asked to register with FEMA even if covered by insurance. Applicants who are underinsured may still receive help after insurance claims have been completed, according to FEMA officials. Business owners can also receive disaster assistance by applying for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The loans are designated to help cover the cost of replacing lost or damaged personal property, according to FEMA officials.
