The performance, part of the orchestra’s Community Concert series, is one that has been welcomed by MRHS music students and orchestra program director Renee Gilliland. “The Houston Symphony Orchestra is a gem in Houston and for them to come out to Katy is very special for the community,” Gilliland said. The concert will appeal to everybody, Gilliland said, because the songs the orchestra will play span through different eras, from classical composers such as Beethoven to contemporary American composers such as John Williams. “There’s going to be a little bit of everything,” Gilliland said. One piece written by composer Aaron Copeland titled “The Lincoln Portrait” will also include a narrator who will read quotes attributed to Lincoln, Gilliland said. Prior to the concert, starting at 6:45 p.m., Morton Ranch High School music students will put their instruments on display for an instrument petting zoo, Gilliland said. “The petting zoo will include everything,” she said. “It will have string, wind and even percussion instruments.” Concerts like these benefit the progression of students, Gilliland said. “Many of [my students] and their families will be coming to enjoy the performance,” she said. “It’s going to be and up close and personal experience.” Because information was well distributed, Gilliland said she expects a full house at the concert. “[The Houston Symphony Orchestra] has been amazing coordinating everything,” Gilliland said. “It’s fantastic outreach by them.” The Houston Symphony Orchestra is directed by Andres Orozco-Estrada.
