The owners of
Galaxy Cafe admit they’re not trying to be a trendy restaurant hot spot. They’re sticking to what has been tried and true for the past 12 years: serving recognizable American food with a gourmet flair.
Galaxy Cafe will open its fourth and largest Austin location June 1 in Northwest Austin. The Northwest Hills area has been an interest of the restaurant’s owners for years, but it took time to find the right location at 8127 Mesa Drive, Ste. A100, said Kelly Chappell, who owns the restaurant along with Jay Bunda and Chris Courtney.
“The density is huge,” Chappell said. “We’re also a very family-oriented restaurant. We have vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, steaks, mac ‘n cheese, salads—anyone you’re with, we can feed them.”
The new location brings a few firsts for Galaxy Cafe, including pancakes on the brunch menu, an expanded wine menu, an espresso machine and local beers on tap, including Austin Beerworks, South Austin Brewery, (512) Brewery Company, Independence Brewing Co. and Live Oak Brewing Company.
“This neighborhood doesn’t have a coffee shop or a place to drink a beer or a glass of wine,” Chappell said, adding DoubleDave’s Pizzaworks, which opened in April across the street, is an exception.
Chappell said the owners are also working to add outdoor seating and more appetizers for happy hour. Happy hour specials include $4 glasses of wine and $3 pints of beer. He said they’ll make changes as necessary to tailor the location to the community’s needs.
“We will evolve with the community,” he said.
The new location has a lounge where customers can plug in laptops, and it will also serve as a space for private events. The cafe will be open daily from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. and offer brunch and mimosas on the weekends until 4 p.m. For more information visit
