The city of Round Rock is working with a transportation firm to develop a 10-year transit plan to be presented to City Council by early fall.
NelsonNygaard, the firm the city hired to develop the proposed plan, is collecting data on what Round Rock residents transit needs are both within the city and region.
Representatives with the firm were at Austin Community Colleges Round Rock campus March 4 to collect feedback from students.
"Right now were looking at what [residents] transit needs are and what [their] travel patterns are," said James Gamez, a senior associate with NelsonNygaard. "Theres been interest in transit within Round Rock as well as connecting with other cities and were trying to assess the demand for that."
Gamez said the firm was talking to students to try and get a variety of different perspectives on possible transit options. He said the firm would be talking to commuters, senior citizens, and young people as well in public sessions in the coming weeks.
Gamez said the firm does not have any set transit proposals for the city yet. He did say there was interest from residents in connecting to the Capital Metro Red Line and other Austin destinations as well as spots within Round Rock.
"I think its important we look at regional connections," Gamez said. "We dont want to develop a transit system in a vacuum. Were definitely looking at coordinating with [Capital Metro] and CARTS as well as other surrounding cities."
Round Rocks only form of city-run public transportation is a demand-response bus system called Star Shuttle. Residents must call ahead and schedule pickup and dropoff. Frequently residents need to book a trip weeks in advance to using the service.
Round Rock resident Karen Choate came to the event at ACC to see what transit options the city was considering. Choate said she frequently uses the citys demand-response system because she cannot drive. She said she is pleased with the service, but getting around the city is exceedingly difficult.
"I would ask [the city] to look into a regular bus line with certain schedules so that people can make their plans around the bus line," Choate said. "I love star shuttle, but its too hard to try to schedule all the time and itd be nice to have something that I can adapt to the transit line instead of star shuttle adapting to mine."
NelsonNygaard has a survey that will be up for the month of March they want residents to take. The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/roundrocktransit
