The board of trustees voted 4-3 at its meeting Feb. 19 to change language in a policy pertaining to faculty grievances. Board members said they will strive to educate employees about the changes after seven teachers showed up to protest the changes.

The changes would restrict the window for PISD employees to file a formal grievance to within 15 days of the event occurring, according to the policy document.

Pflugerville Educators Association President August Plock said the district has an informal grievance policy which can take months to resolve. He said with the policy changes employees who could not resolve the issue through informal means might be barred from filing a formal complaint because of the time restriction.

However, according to PISD Public Information Officer Amanda Brim, employees can ask for the window to be extended while working through the informal process.

Brim said the Texas Association of School Boards recommended the change as part of a policy update, and more than 500 state districts had adopted the change.

"There are some concerns—I understand," PISD Superintendent Alex Torrez said. "But in essence we're keeping the same process."

Plock said he is happy the board will work with teachers concerning the grievance policy changes.
