In June, Georgetown city staff received the results of an economic impact analysis on the citys 2014 Red Poppy Festival. The analysis was presented to downtown Georgetown stakeholders and business owners during the quarterly Downtown Low-Down meeting July 16 at Roots Bistro.
The study surveyed 580 attendees from the weekend festival. Of those, 293 were returned, said Cari Miller, Georgetown Convention and Visitors Bureau tourism manager.
The survey asked respondents where they were from, how many people attended the festival in their party, how much money the spent and how many days they attended the festival.
The analysis estimates 45,000 people attended the event, which was held April 2627, and of those, approximately 23,000 were from outside of Georgetown. A majority of visitors were from Travis and Williamson counties, with the second largest group of visitors traveling from Parker and Tarrant counties in the DallasFort Worth area and Hays and Bell counties, according to the analysis.
Non-local attendees were estimated to spend more than $2.5 millionabout $76 per person per dayduring the festival, including about $1.4 million on food and drinks, more than $644,000 on lodging and more than $419,000 on retail, according to the analysis.
Local attendees were estimated to spend nearly $1.2 millionabout $42 per person per dayduring the festival with the majority spent on food, drinks and retail items, according to the analysis.
