Vincent Torres, president of the Austin ISD board of trustees, said today that he will not seek reelection in November when there will be five AISD trustee positions up for election.

In an email message to his District 4 constituents and supporters, he wrote that his name will not be on the ballot, but he looks forward to supporting the new District 4 trustee once he or she is chosen this fall.

"Instead of campaigning and being distracted by the politics of a trustee election, in the time I have remaining on the board I have decided to focus my efforts on selecting the best superintendent possible for AISD," he said. "I know that there are many great people in District 4 who have the requisite skills, qualities, time and dedication necessary to serve our district well."

Torres said at this point he is not aware of anyone who has definitely made the commitment to run for the position, so he is not placing his support behind any potential new trustee yet.

Torres served on the board for two terms and said he is proud of his work, including advocating for and securing funding for art, music and physical education teachers at elementary schools, helping to pass the 2008 bond, hiring former superintendent Meria Carstarphen in 2009, and helping to pass two of the four bond propositions in the 2013 bond.
