Seton Healthcare Family is scheduled to offer free skin cancer screenings June 7 at University Medical Center Brackenridge, 601 E. 15th Street.

The screenings will be offered from 8 a.m.–noon on the first floor of the hospital near the day surgery area. Seton dermatologists and partners from the American Cancer Society, Austin Dermatological Society and American Academy of Dermatology will conduct the screenings, which take about 15 minutes to complete. Medical professionals are available for assistance in English and Spanish languages.

Participants do not need to sign up ahead of time and will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Health insurance is not needed to receive the screening, said Dawn Parsons, clinical manager for Seton Cancer Screening. After the exam, Seton will provide referrals for patients who may need further tests or treatment, she said.

If diagnosed in the early stages, skin cancer is typically curable, according to Seton. Anyone who has had frequent sunburns, long-term sun exposure, as well as anyone who has previously had skin cancer is encouraged to receive a screening. Parsons said it is important to try to limit exposure to the sun from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. because it is easier to get sunburned during those hours.

"The biggest thing is just being aware of how incredibly intense the sun is, especially here in the Southwest and how quickly you can get burned," she said. "Sunscreen is wonderful but mistakes people make with it is that they don't use enough."
