Updated June 2 at 3 p.m.:
Construction on a new 24-hour caf concept at 5404 Manchaca Road will begin in July, and the restaurant will open in late 2014 or early 2015, said Shane Widner, president of South Austin Ventures LLC, which owns Strange Brew Austin Coffee.
"Our working name is Southside Caf but we plan to do a cash prize contest for the naming of the 24 hour caf, and we'll be doing that through Facebook and Strange Brew's newsletter," he said.
Widner said the new caf, located a few doors down from Strange Brew and Strange Brew Lounge Side, will have a 24-hour breakfast menu along with a wood-fired pizza oven and a regular menu featuring some Mediterranean influences and vegetarian options.
"We're going to offer a wide variety of dishes, it's kind of a locavorian menu where most of the items will be locally sourced whenever possible," he said. "There's a lot of people that [want a restaurant with] a really good quality menu offering with neighborhood pricing. We want to very much keep that and not put something trendy and high priced in there."
Details about the naming contest will begin in the next month or so, he said.
He added the company plans to start renovating its Strange Brew location in about three months by renovating the interior, expanding the size of Lounge Side and adding an awning and landscaping to the patio.
Original story, posted June 2:
Strange Brew Austin Coffee president Scott Ward said June 2 the company plans to open a new 24-hour cafe concept in the nearby space of Bakehouse Restaurant & Bar, which is slated to close this month.
Located at 5404 Manchaca Road, the Bakehouse will continue its operations until June 15, after which the site will undergo extensive remodeling and conversion, Ward said in a June 2 newsletter.
"After 33 years of operating the Bakehouse, [owner Carl Zapffe] is ready to retire, and who better to pass the torch to than his neighbors at Strange Brew? ... We are gratified and honored to carry on the fine tradition of friendly, neighborhood service with our new 24-hour caf featuring a terrific menu with the same low prices that made the Bakehouse a local favorite for over three decades," Ward wrote.
Ward said his business partner Shane Widner signed a long-term contract on May 31 for the adjacent restaurant. The company's announcement did not include more details about the new concept or why it chose the location just a few doors down from its original restaurant at 5326 Manchaca Road. The company has raised more than 75 percent of its $1 million offering, which started in mid-April.
Since Strange Brew opened in 2010 as a coffee shop, it has expanded by adding food, beer and wine to its menu and opening Strange Brew Lounge Side, a venue hosting musicians every night. More information about the business is available at www.strangebrewaustin.com.
