An event April 12 featuring barbecue, live music and prizes at local venue Strange Brew will benefit the Family Diabetes Resource Center of Texas.

Dan Farmer said his daughter Kristi founded the Family Diabetes Resource Center of Texas after her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 13 months. The nonprofit works to help families with low to moderate income pay for prescription and doctor fees in emergency situations.

"We help families get grants to get supplies because it's such an expensive deal," he said.

The Spring Fest BBQ event will feature buffet-style barbecue and performances by Malford Milligan, Cold Sweat, Sally Allen, and Kacy Crowley. Silent auction items include hotel stays, golf passes and guitars autographed by Los Lonely Boys, Ray Benson, Joe Ely, Ian Moore and Charlie Sexton, Farmer said.

The fundraiser takes place from noon–4 p.m. at Strange Brew, Lounge Side, 5326 Manchaca Road. $15 (online) or $20 (at the door), $8–10 (ages 5–14), free (ages 4 and younger). More information is available at www.familydiabetesrctx.com.
