On Feb. 18, Lakeway City Council unanimously accepted the proposed city charter revisions submitted by the Charter Review Committee, headed by former Councilman Alan Tye. The Lakeway city charter requires a committee conduct a charter review every four years.

The charter changes recommended increasing the terms for the mayor and City Council members from two years to three years and decreasing the number of successive terms from three terms to two terms, Tye said. He said the proposal would provide more collective government experience for the council and eliminate elections during which a majority of the council is elected at one time.

Lakeway will not be holding a city election in May because incumbent City Council members are unopposed. Instead, the proposed charter revisions will be voted upon in November, Deputy City Manager Chessie Zimmerman said.

She said that when a greater the number of government bodies hold an election, the costs are lower for each entity.

"The City will save a considerable sum over holding the election now," Councilman Joe Bain said. "[By holding the election in November], we would share the costs of the election with other entities."
