According to unofficial results, Marco Montoya is leading the race for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Congress District 25 race. The victor will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Roger Williams in the November general election.
With 35 out of 219 precincts reporting, Montoya claimed a 32-percentage-point advantage over opponent Stuart Gourd, an Austin attorney. Montoya received 66.6 percent, or 1,330 of the total votes, while Gourd secured 33.4 percent, or 667 votes.
A public health services professional who has worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Montoya said he is running for Congress because he is frustrated with the lack of bipartisan cooperation in the House of Representatives.
Gourd has worked for the Texas Workforce Commission as a hearing officer. Unemployment benefits, universal health care, and poverty and homelessness are among the issues he hoped to address if elected.
District 25 spans about 200 miles from Wimberley to the Fort Worth area.
All results are unofficial until canvassed.
