Since opening its first location in October, fast-casual restaurant Mighty Bird has opened a second North Austin location and earned the No. 2 spot on CultureMap Austin's 5 Best Food Bets for ACL in 2013.

Owners Brendan Puthoff and Kaleb Smith opened Mighty Bird on Research Boulevard near Duval Road in October. The Anderson Lane location opened Jan. 13 and has capacity to seat about 40 people indoors, Puthoff said.

The restaurant specializes in brined rotisserie chicken tacos, homemade tortillas and hatch green chile queso. Mighty Bird also offers wraps, salads and sides.

A frequent customer favorite is The Road Trip, a taco topped with chicken, avocado, cheese and house-made Mighty Sauce similar to a Sriracha aioli on a corn tortilla, Puthoff said. The restaurant's specialty is moist chicken soaked in a homemade brine—a mixture of water, salt and spices—and slow-roasted in a fire rotisserie, he said.

One of the restaurant's signature cooking techniques is pulling the chicken from the bone right before it is made into a taco to retain moisture.

"Business has been unbelievable. We've been very fortunate," Puthoff said. "The reception has been fantastic. We are getting a lot of walk-in and drive-by business that see we're open and want to try something new."

Puthoff said the bird business has been busy catering for Apple Inc., the Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

In 2014, Puthoff and Smith plan on participating in community events such as the Austin Food & Wine Festival and the Zilker Kite Festival.
