Hot topics in 2013

Westlake Academy expansion

  • The $85 million expansion started in June 2013. The state's only municipally owned charter school, 10 years old in 2013, has been bursting at the seams as more residents move to Westlake and more students from out-of-town enter an annual lottery for slots. The deadline for the lottery this year is Jan. 31. Visit westlakeacademy.org for details.

Granada subdivision approval

  • The 84-lot residential subdivision caused considerable discussion at Town Council meetings as residents came to protest the potential disruption to Westlake's rural way of life. Granada was approved in February.

Entrada approved

  • A large, European village–style mixed-used development was approved after the developer removed apartments from the plans and made other changes. Entrada, a $500 million development, will include a manmade lake, retail, dining, residential villas, a chapel and more on 85 acres at FM 1938 and Solana Boulevard.

A look at 2014

School expansion to be completed

  • The expansion is expected to be finished in time for the 2014–15 school year.

Granada construction

  • Infrastructure will go in first for half the development, 42 homes, this year.

More Entrada approvals needed

  • The development has received zoning and preliminary plat approvals, but the council still is considering whether to make the development a PID (Public Improvement District). Under a PID, taxpayers in the development would pay extra tax to maintain public improvements there, providing a reliable source of funding. Infrastructure construction could start in late 2014.

FM 1938 work

  • The next phase of streetscaping on FM 1938/Davis Boulevard, which will cost an estimated $1.2 million, will begin. The work will include trails, lighting at intersections, entry monuments, bollards, shade structures and landscaping on both sides of FM 1938 from SH 114 south to Randoll Mill Road.
