Keep Austin Beautiful and Austin Sierra Club are seeking volunteers to help clean up holiday decorations on Capital of Texas Hwy., also known as Loop 360, on Jan. 11 from 9–11 a.m.
Participants may take the decorations home for reuse, and KAB will provide cleanup supplies. Volunteers should meet at 7806 N. Capital of Texas Hwy., which is next to the entrance to Canyon Springs Apartments. Volunteers can park in the grass lot between the apartments and Hwy. 360.
Participants are also asked to wear closed-toe shoes and either bring their vehicles or carpool. Cleanup efforts will take place between Great Hills Trail to FM 2222.
This is the second year KAB and Austin Sierra Club have organized a tree decorations cleanup on Loop 360. Ivey Kaiser, KAB's community programs associate, said that in 2013 about 35 volunteers participated. So far about 75 volunteers have signed up for this year's cleanup.
"We should all go back and pick up our decorations just so the need for cleanup won't be necessary, and we can keep this area litter-free," Kaiser said. "We think [decorating trees is] a nice tradition. We just want to make sure people are being responsible with it."
She said about 100 trees on Loop 360 still have decorations that need to be removed.
Interested volunteers may fill out a registration form on KAB's website. Volunteers may email Kaiser with any questions at [email protected].
KAB organizes several beautifying efforts in Austin, including the annual Clean Sweep, where thousands of volunteers clean about 140 different locations in Austin in one day. Last year, the organization cleaned up areas such as Zilker Park and Lady Bird Lake in Central Austin and Walnut Creek Park in Northwest Austin.
Kaiser said KAB is accepting recommendations of places to be cleaned for this year's event on April 12 from 9–11 a.m. Anyone interested in submitting a recommendation may do so by visiting the website.
