Capital Metro site relocates during West Hwy. 290 construction

Capital Metro confirmed plans to relocate the Oak Hill Park & Ride to parking lot G at the Austin Community College Pinnacle campus on weekdays through next summer.

Earlier this year, the Texas Department of Transportation began work on a series of renovations to the West Hwy. 290 corridor. These renovations include work on the William Cannon Drive intersection.

"Capital Metro has been working with TxDOT thus far to coexist at the Oak Hill Park & Ride during construction," spokeswoman Melissa Ayala said.

She added that the project has become more complex, leading Capital Metro to relocate the Park & Ride on Dec. 9.

TxDOT will add turn lanes at FM 1826, the Pinnacle campus driveway and Convict Hill Road, and create a center turn lane between FM 1826 and Convict Hill Road. The project is estimated to cost $4.6 million, according to TxDOT.

TxDOT also plans to construct continuous-flow intersections, or CFIs, at William Cannon Drive and Hwy. 71.

At CFIs, lanes are moved to allow a driver to turn left while a driver on the opposite side of the intersection can drive straight ahead, for example.

The project is estimated to cost $6.5 million, according to TxDOT.

These improvements are intended to offer short-term traffic relief while officials seek a long-term solution.

Last year, TxDOT and the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority launched Oak Hill Parkway, a new environmental study that will work toward a long-term solution for traffic at the Y at Oak Hill. Residents have attended public hearings to review several options, which could include frontage lanes, express lanes and/or connector ramps.
