A series of projects to widen Spring Cypress Road, where construction was expected to carry on until early January, could be finished ahead of time, according to officials with Harris County Precinct 4.
The two projects involve widening roughly 4.5 miles of Spring Cypress Road—from Hwy. 249 to Telge Road—from a two-lane asphalt roadway to a four-lane concrete boulevard.
The part of the project running from Telge Road to Faulkey Gully was awarded to Menade, Inc., and roadway construction commenced September 2012. The contractor could finish the project one month in advance, said Pamela Rocchi with Harris County Precinct 4's capital improvement projects division.
"[They are] currently working on the bridge at Telge Road and the detention pond," she said. "Ninety-eight percent of the roadway pavement has been installed to date."
The second project, which picks up at Faulkey Gully and carries on to Hwy. 249, is poised to finish even sooner, Rocchi said. With an original completion goal of Jan. 6, the contractor thinks the project could be finished mid-October, more than two months ahead of schedule.
The cost for the project from Telge to Faulkey Gully is around $9.9 million, while the second portion costs $8.6 million.
Precinct 4 officials targeted Spring Cypress to be widened because of an increase in drivers using the roadways for both daily commutes and to visit the growing number of retail businesses in the area.
Part of the project also includes maintenance on the bridge that crosses Faulkey Gully—where the two projects join—near the Lakes at Northpointe neighborhood. Officials have identified several issues to address, including the bank beginning to slump and minor damage to the river control devices.
Other improvements include the development of a storm sewer system and traffic signal modifications. For more information, visit www.hcp4.net.
