Round Rock ISD broke ground Sept. 24 on Success High School, which upon completion will accommodate about 400 students.
SHS, located at 500 Gattis School Road, is expected to be complete in July 2014 and to open for the 2014–15 school year. The facility will be 69,000 square feet and includes a food service kitchen and a child care facility. Round Rock ISD's board of trustees approved $25 million of the district's fund balance for construction in August 2012.
SHS Principal Thomasine Stewart said the new campus will allow for increased enrollment, expansion and more student resources. In June, SHS already had 65 students on a waiting list.
"This has been one of my dreams in the making because this is where my heart is," Stewart said. "To see this come to fruition—I just know that we are going to be able to do some fantastic things for the kids. I couldn't be prouder of the district or of my kids."
SHS is designed to help students who have unique class scheduling needs, are interested in accelerated classes, seek a nontraditional work environment or who are in at-risk situations.
SHS began as a separate RRISD program before becoming a high school, and has been operating out of portable classrooms at Stony Point High School.
The board of trustees is accepting name nominations for the high school through Sept. 30. Superintendent Jess Chvez said the naming process is likely to begin in early October and could be completed by November.
According to board policy, the name recommendations for the high school will be reviewed by a committee. Name nominations may be faxed (512-464-5055), submitted through the district's website or mailed to Round Rock ISD at 1311 Round Rock Ave. Nominations must include a reason for the suggestion. More guidelines and information is also available online.
