Residents from the Garrison Park, South Manchaca and Westgate neighborhoods will meet Sept. 10 to discuss potential plans for parks, green infrastructure and sustainability in South Austin.
The meeting is part of the yearlong planning process for the South Austin Combined Neighborhood Plan, which is part of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan the city adopted in June 2012 to direct Austin's growth and redevelopment for the next 30 years. The SACNP process aims to identify what residents like about their area and where they want to see development, city of Austin Planner Francis Reilly said.
"We know from past meetings and from our initial survey that people really love how green the neighborhood is. We also know that some of those trees are approaching the end of their lives," Reilly said. "One of the things we want to talk about is [that] we have a great tree canopy now. How can we keep it that way?"
SACNP discussions will become the basis for the goals, policies and actions that will actually be included in the neighborhood plan, and city departments will refer to the neighborhood plan when creating their own departmental budgets and prioritizing capital improvements, he said.
At the Sept. 10 meeting, Reilly said attendees can discuss how they would like to incorporate features such as Williamson Creek and rain gardens into the plan. The event is scheduled for 6:30–8:45 p.m. in the cafeteria at Cunningham Elementary School, 2200 Berkeley Ave.
