City Councilman Paul Kline has tendered his resignation effective immediately, according to an email addressed from Kline to Mayor Caroline Murphy. Bee Cave City Manager Frank Salvato provided to Community Impact Newspaper the email, which was received by the city Sept. 6.
Kline cites his recent travel schedule as making full participation on the council challenging but not insurmountable.
"However, I need to weigh the difficulty against what good I can do in the role," Kline wrote. "When I ran for the office, I did so on the premise of pushing the city to accelerate the pace. Based on the current council composition, I do not believe I can be effective in that regard. It is better for me to step aside in favor of someone who can perhaps better influence the council, or at least have better availability."
Kline, in his correspondence, urged Murphy to ask former Councilman Bill Goodwin to fill his seat as having the next highest vote total. Goodwin was not reelected in the May 11 city council election.
According to the Bee Cave City Council agenda for its Sept. 10 meeting, the council will consider action regarding the acceptance of Kline's resignation, declaring a vacancy, and appointing a person to serve in Kline's place until a special election is held in May 2014.
Kline could not be reached for comment.
