Families in Austin can get the information they need to prepare for the coming school year—and walk away with free school supplies—at Austin ISD's Back-to-School Bash and Safety Fair on Aug. 24.

"It's sort of one-stop shopping to learn and get information and get questions answered in one location," said Vincent Torres, president of the AISD board of trustees. "I think it's a very helpful event, and I hope to see a lot of people there."

The 2013–14 school year begins Aug. 26. In addition to safety demonstrations and details about district programs, Back-to-School Bash attendees can receive door prizes, free school supplies and gear including bike helmets, Torres said.

A+ Federal Credit Union and local nonprofit The Neighborhood will give away more than 2,000 backpacks during the Bash while supplies last. Students can also receive free on-site immunizations from Seton Medical Center if they bring their vaccination records. Last year nearly 300 vaccines were administered, according to AISD.

Hosted by the district and the city of Austin, the free event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez St., Exhibit Hall 4. More information including local shuttle service is available at www.austinisd.org/bash.
