At an Aug. 5 Austin Community College board meeting, the city of Leander reiterated the need for an ACC Leander campus to be built, citing that between 2025–2030, Leander population could surpass Cedar Park's.

Leander City Manager Kent Cagle said there are currently 10,000 homes in Leander and 13,531 more residential lots have been approved by the city for development, some of which are already under construction. The city of Leander is grateful for ACC's Cypress Creek Campus in Cedar Park, Cagle said, but with more expected growth, a campus is needed in Leander.

"We know there is crowding at Cypress Creek, and with the growth that we're having in Leander we believe that overcrowding will continue," Cagle said.

He said that areas north of Leander are also expected to grow, and many of those students could also benefit from an ACC Leander campus. According to a consultant hired by the city to research economic development options, Leander's current estimated population is 30,324. Leander's population could reach 35,439 by 2018, according to the same report.

Leander City Council member David Siebold said he sees an ACC Leander campus as an integral part of the city's continued growth.

ACC's board of trustees could decide on Aug. 19 whether to call a bond election, which would include funding for the building of the Leander campus.
