A fire erupted early July 2 at a five-story Comfort Suites under construction along Hwy. 290 near the FM 1960 and Hwy. 6 interchange. The Cy–Fair Volunteer Fire Department received calls around 3 a.m. of the four-alarm fire. Staff and occupants of a nearby motel were evacuated as firefighters worked for several hours to extinguish the blaze.
The structure collapsed and firefighters continue to work to prevent further damage. One firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital with minor burns and is in stable condition, according to the Harris County Fire Marshall's office.
"There is no cause determination at this time," said Lieutenant Investigator Chad Shaw. "The investigation will be extensive involving heavy equipment, which is a slow process."
A fire and life safety inspection report from May 7 showed there were no deficiencies found within the structure. The investigation is ongoing.
