Sunset Valley City Council unanimously approved three staff recommendations regarding its out-of-service well system on June 4.
Sunset Valley will continue to monitor the status of the city's historic well permit with the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District and defend any challenges that would threaten this permit.
The city will also proceed with the update to the Water Master Plan including possible additional connections and distribution system improvements in the well service area including the ability to reinstate the use of the well system with minimal additional expense.
Lastly, it will prepare updated financial projections as contained in the Water Planning Report on a periodic basis. This would allow City Council to evaluate the financial considerations and take appropriate action.
Two recommendations were tabled for future discussion: continuing to maintain the well system for irrigation and landscaping use, and repealing the sections of an existing ordinance that would allow for the elimination of the well water system.
The ordinance still contains language that makes it unclear if the current use of city of Austin wholesale water is allowed in the well service area.
The council will discuss water master planning goals and related topics on July 16, City Administrator Clay Collins said.
