Spirit of community, buying local drives approach

Hummingbird Tea Room opened in June 2012 at 30420 FM 2978, and in nine months, the restaurant's offering of distinctive teas and homemade breakfast and lunch items has helped it emerge as a one-of-a-kind location in The Woodlands.

"There really are no other tea rooms in The Woodlands," owner Nasim Bell said.

Bell said business at Hummingbird tea Room has steadily increased since its opening, thanks to word-of-mouth and an online presence. She also is heavily involved in establishing roots in the community, donating baked goods to local groups' fundraisers and schools, including offering a hummingbird cake to Buckalew Elementary for Teacher Appreciation Day.

The menu at Hummingbird Tea Room has also evolved to include new items.

"Now that we've found our feet, we've added more to the menu, like wraps and sandwiches," Bell said.

As a small business owner herself, Bell appreciates the need to support other local businesses.

"It is so important for the community to support small businesses," she said. "As we grow we continue to help each other out."

Most of what customers see in the store comes from local businesses, such as the eggs and honey the chefs use, the store's glasswork, even the handmade tea table built by a local carpenter.

Bell has contacted nearby businesses, including a dance studio and a pottery studio, to establish partnerships. She said they are working to create events such as a "dance and tea," or offer tea during nearby pottery classes.

"Our small business are working with each other," she said. "Small businesses are key to any community."
