Starting Feb. 28, visitors will have to pay to park in the Rainey Street district.
There will be 31 on-street pay stations in the area, as well as four pay stations for approximately 125 parking spaces at the Mexcian American Cultural Center. The parking meters are part of a larger effort to help improve mobility in the Rainey Street district, according a City of Austin news release.
"City staff has been working with the community to discuss the significant increase in pedestrian, bicycle and car traffic due to redevelopment, along with ways to improve parking capacity, reduce congestion and address safety challenges," according to the release.
Hours of operation for the meters will be 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday–Wednesday, 8 a.m.–midnight Thursday–Friday, and 1 a.m.–midnight on Saturdays.
In addition to the parking meters, the city is considering converting Rainey Street into a one-way road and adding bike lanes and sidewalks, according to the release.
