Hays County commissioners voted unanimously Jan. 22 to adopt a new countywide transportation master plan.

Developed following more than a year of discussions and public meetings, the plan offers a guide for future road projects throughout the county, including new loops around Kyle and San Marcos.

The plan also calls for additional lanes for roads in the county's fastest-growing areas. However, the plan does not rank the road priorities or set a construction timeline for them. Commissioners said they will build the projects when they determine the time is right and funding is available.

"I think it's a pretty comprehensive plan," Precinct 2 Commissioner Mark Jones said. "We're not coming out and saying, 'This is what we're going to do at this time,' but it should be a help to landowners, developers and citizens."

On Feb. 5, the Commissioners Court took action on one of the priorities outlined in the plan, approving $187,000 for engineering and environmental services for FM 110. FM 110 is a planned loop around eastern San Marcos, connecting McCarty Lane in the south with Yarrington Road in the north and bypassing I-35 throughout most of the city.

County officials hope to fund the $60 million project in part with state money left over from recent transportation projects that were completed for less than the budgeted amount.
