Hays CISD is looking for community input in its search for a new superintendent.

On Feb. 1, the district announced a short online survey in which parents, staff and community members can choose what characteristics they are looking for in the next superintendent.

"We want to know what is on the parents' mind," board of trustees President Willie Tenorio, said. "We want to know what we are doing well and what we could work on."

The district is also holding a series of public meetings to seek input:

  • Feb. 11, 6:30 p.m.–8 p.m., Hays High School cafeteria, 4800 Jack C Hays Trail, Buda
  • Feb. 12, 6:30 p.m.–8 p.m., Lehman High School cafeteria, 1700 Lehman Road, Kyle
  • Feb. 13, 1 p.m.–2:30 p.m., Hays CISD Performing Arts Center, 979 Kohler's Crossing Road, Kyle

As primary stakeholders, parents deserve to have a say in who will come in as superintendent, Tenorio said.

"The survey will help as a guide for this process," Tenorio said. "But this is only the first step."

A superintendent is in charge of the day-to-day duties of the district and works with the elected members of the school board. Tenorio said Hays CISD is looking for someone who has a proven track record of improving student achievement as well as having the ability to work with the community and public.

"I have my opinions, and the school board does, too," Tenorio said. "With this survey, it will help us build the profile for what we are looking for."

The search for a new superintendent began in January following the resignation of the previous superintendent, Jeremy Lyon, who took a similar job at Frisco ISD. The board is hoping to choose a finalist by April or May.

"We are a strong school in a wonderful community," Tenorio said. "I am confident that we are going to find a great candidate."
