Pflugerville roads will receive $1 million for one-time improvement projects after Pflugerville City Council allocated general capital reserve funds at its Jan. 22 meeting.
In a fiscal year, if revenue brings in more money than the city originally budgeted for, the excess funds are put in a general reserve. A surplus of revenue from the past two years left $2,570,177 in reserves for the council to assign to different projects throughout the city. The council dedicated a total of $2,140,000 to projects including road overlay improvements, renovations to the animal shelter, and new city banners and signage.
"Each year, we strive to budget very conservatively regarding the amount of money we'll be receiving," Pflugerville City Manager Brandon Wade said. "What this gives us the opportunity to do is ... one-time capital improvement projects that would benefit the community."
The city's parks and trails systems will receive $140,000 from the fund to create a master plan for improvements. The plan will cover 14 city parks, including Highland North and land near Caldwell Elementary School, and give the city ideas on what to do with donated parkland.
"Last year, the Parks Commission identified parks ... we received over the years through development or donation or purchase, that [are] just raw land," Pflugerville Assistant City Manager Tom Word said. "There's no development on it, there's no plan for how it ought to be developed. The proposal was to go in and have these areas master-planned ... [to] give a good idea of what the areas ought to be used for, what the cost of the improvements would be [and] what the cost of maintaining those improvements would be as we move forward."
