Tomball's Abandoned Animal Rescue opened its Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic today with a full schedule for veterinarian Dr. Dev Rajan. The clinic is open four days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, and while appointments are recommended, it accepts walk-ins Wednesday through Friday.

After his former employer, another Houston-based spay and neuter clinic, was forced to close, Dr. Rajan found his way to AAR in Tomball through acquaintance. He has spent years working with animals who have been abused, abandoned, and mistreated by animal hoarders, he said, and wants to play a part in solving the overpopulation of dogs and cats.

"I want to do something productive to proactively prevent more healthy animals from being euthanized because there is no one to adopt them," Dr. Rajan said.

The clinic operates from the shelter's main facility at 419 E. Hufsmith Road, and offers other services, including wellness exams, minor surgeries, heart worm exams and medicines for flee protection.

AAR Executive Director Debbie Allison Dr. Rajan fills a void at AAR after spay and neuter services had to be discontinued in 2012. Although space is cramped with the addition of Dr. Rajan's office in the AAR building, Allison said the organization is in the process of fundraising for a new 7,500-square-foot building that will provide a separate—and more spacious—office for the wellness clinic.

"[Having Dr. Rajan] is very exciting news for Abandoned Animal Rescue," she said. "We did our own spay and neutering, but stopped in June with our other veterinarian left. When this opportunity came along, we had to jump on it."
