Volunteers are needed in Leander for the United Way of Williamson County's annual day of community service in honor of civil rights activist and humanitarian Martin Luther King Jr.

From 9 a.m.–noon Jan. 21, groups of volunteers plan to help paint, build, organize and assist in beautifying Williamson County organizations in need. In Leander, 15 volunteers are needed to repaint the parking lot at Williamson–Burnet County Opportunities, a nonprofit that provides social services and economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income people. Volunteers must register online and meet on the day of service at WBC Opportunities, 2702 S. Bagdad Road, Leander. Individuals, families and teams of coworkers are welcome.

The United Way's MLK Day of Service is designed to transform King's life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems. Each of the 10 volunteer projects scheduled in Georgetown, Round Rock, Taylor and Leander is intended to strengthen the community, empower individuals and bridge barriers, according to the United Way.

"Dr. King has inspired generations with his commitment to the ideals of unity, purpose, and the great things that can happen when we work together toward a common goal," said LeAnn Powers, chief professional officer of United Way of Williamson County. "Volunteering time in the community is a great way to honor his memory and reflects what his life and teachings were all about."

Last year, more than 75 volunteers participated in the MLK Day of Service at seven locations in Williamson County. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, President Barack Obama's national call to service initiative.
