The engraved pavers that were sold in order to furnish the Kyle Public Library were installed Oct. 1.

The pavers raised $20,000, and Kathy Ryan, chairwoman of the Library Advisory Board, said the money was used to provide computer desks, book displays and other furniture.

"There's been a long history of community support for the library in Kyle," Ryan said. "The Friends of the Library has been the group for many years that provides funding for the library."

Ryan said the Friends have been the primary funding source for the library since 1890.

Ryan estimated that the library sold more than 200 of the engraved pavers, which have been installed on the patio outside the side entrance to the library.

Many of the brick-like pavers simply contain the names of the donors, while others contain lines from literary works. One such paver contains Dr. Seuss' famous proclamation "Oh, the places you'll go!"

"Many of the pavers that were purchased are of families that have been here for generations," Ryan said. "Parts of it are a little walk through history. You can see many of the families that have been here since the 1800s."

The Kyle Public Library, which opened May 12, is 20,000 square feet in size. The new facility is about four times the size of the old building, which was opened in 1962.

The library was receiving about 700 visitors each day during the summer. Ryan said that number has decreased slightly since summer, and many of the weekly readings and activities ended.

"It's beautiful," she said. "It's very spacious and meets our needs, and it's being very well used."

The library contains 32,000 books, 50 computer workstations, a children's area and two community rooms.

The Kyle Public Library is located at 550 Scott St.
