For the first time in the city's history, a U.S. Olympic athlete hails from Pflugerville.
Micah Lawrence, a 2008 Pflugerville High School graduate who worked for the city Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Department as a lifeguard from 2006–2009, will make her first Olympic appearance when the games get underway July 27 in London. She qualified for the U.S. Olympic swim team in the breaststroke event. Lawrence is a graduate of Auburn University in Alabama.
Pflugerville Mayor Jeff Coleman said his daughter and Lawrence were friends and had attended the same church.
"This is a special time for Pflugerville and obviously for Micah and her family," Coleman said. "Any time you have a small town you have connections woven throughout the town."
To show support for Lawrence and other U.S. Olympic athletes, the city contributed to the Team USA Olympic Raise Our Flag project, which collects funds to support the team. On July 10, the Pflugerville city council proclaimed July 10 as Micah Lawrence Olympian Day in the city.
