The Sunset Valley City Council unanimously appointed former council candidate Jeff Burdett to the dais at its June 5 meeting.

City voters had created a vacancy on the council when they elected then Mayor Pro Tem Rose Cardona to be the new mayor. Cardona resigned her council seat prior to becoming mayor. An ordinance required the city to accept applications for the vacancy.

"My legislative background, my familiarity with city issues from serving on a committee and my experience serving on the state board for a nonprofit group make me a good choice for the open seat," he wrote in a statement.
