Unofficial election results show U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett won the Democratic primary race for Texas' 35th Congressional District.
Doggett, who has served in Congress since 1995, received 93.05 percent of the vote, followed by Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Romo with 4.29 percent and Maria Luisa Alvarado—who ran for lieutenant governor in 2006—with 2.66 percent.
"From the Alamo to the Alamo Drafthouse, tonight's victory is a victory for Texas families," Doggett said in a statement to Community Impact Newspaper. "Rick Perry thought he could pick and choose, through his crooked map, who will serve in Washington. He forgot that the people choose their leaders. Now the work begins for November."
According to The Texas Tribune, Romo called Doggett on the evening of May 29 and conceded the race.
Controversy has surrounded the newly created District 35, which spans from Austin to San Antonio, and includes portions of Bexar, Comal and Hays counties as well as all of Atascosa and Caldwell counties.
During the recent redistricting process, the Republican-led Legislature divided Travis County into five districts, cutting at Doggett's support base by reconfiguring his old district—District 25— and creating District 35 out of it.
With a strong Hispanic base, Romo was expected to be a viable threat to the incumbent.
In the Republican primary, Susan Narvaiz, former mayor of San Marcos, leads with 46.40 percent.
She is followed by Rob Roark, a San Marcos quality control inspector, with 35.55 percent and John Yoggerst, a member of Texas Credit Union Commission, with 18.06 percent.
