The Round Rock City Council gave approval April 26 to a nearly $2 million contract to construct the Municipal Office Complex Plaza and to improve the surrounding street areas.

Construction on the road improvements and the plaza, which will be located on the south side of the McConico Building at the intersection of South Brown Street and West Florence Street, is scheduled to take six months and will likely start around the beginning of June, Transportation Director Gary Hudder said.

The contract is for $1,972,765.37 million and covers the street work and construction of the plaza. The work is being paid for through 2002 general obligation bonds.

The MOC Plaza is the second of three plazas that were proposed in downtown Round Rock as part of the city's Downtown Master Plan. A third plaza, the Town Green Plaza on Round Rock Avenue, would be coupled with a realignment of the road and has faced some pushback from the community, specifically from Round Rock Bakery, also known as Lone Star Bakery.

The first plaza, City Hall Plaza, is located on Main Street next to City Hall.
