Hays County Elections Administrator Joyce Cowan is reminding voters to check their precinct numbers and polling places before heading to the polls for early voting.

Cowan said the delay in finalizing redistricting has also caused several elections throughout the county to be held almost back-to-back, with each election having different locations for early voting.

"This could cause some confusion among voters," she said.

Because of the redistricting, many precincts have changed boundaries, and voters may not be in the same precinct they were during the last election.

The Hays County Elections Department, which was located on Broadway Street in San Marcos, has moved to the government center, 712 S. Stagecoach Trail in San Marcos.

The county has complete details on voting, including sample ballots and precinct locations on its website, www.co.hays.tx.us/elections. Voters may also contact the elections department at 393-7310. The office of the Texas Secretary of State also has information at www.votexas.org.

Upcoming elections include:

May 12: City and school districts (early voting April 30–May 8)

May 29: Primary party elections (early voting May 14–25)

July 31: Primary runoff elections (early voting July 23–27) unless changed by federal courts

No homestead amendment on May ballot

As the May elections approach, Cowan said, her office is receiving calls about an out-of-date email urging voters to take action on a statewide constitutional amendment on homestead exemptions.

"There are no constitutional amendments at all on the May ballot," Cowan said in a statement. "An old email from 2007 is circulating again, misinforming voters that there is a constitutional amendment on the ballot that could change the homestead exemption. That amendment was passed in 2007 and has been in effect since then and is not part of the May elections."
