Cedar Park's May 2012 mayoral election was shaken up when the city's incumbent mayor, Bob Lemon, withdrew his application to run for re-election and Councilman Matt Powell announced he will run to replace him.

Powell filed paperwork to run for mayor Feb. 24.

"In my last seven years as a city councilman, I have met with hundreds of residents, business owners and visitors to our city. I am humbled to have been asked by so many of my fellow residents and colleagues to step up and offer even more to the city we so deeply care for," Powell said in a release. "I am also thankful to Mayor Lemon for his good service to Cedar Park."

Powell lists the Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, 1890 Ranch Shopping Center, Brushy Creek Sports Park, Cedar Park Recreation Center and the Cedar Park Center as projects he has seen through to completion since he was elected to the council in 2005.

Lemon was first elected to the council in 1995, and he served four terms as a councilman before taking a break. He ran for mayor and won in 2005 and has served as Cedar Park's mayor ever since. Lemon represents the city on the Capital Area Metropolitan Organization's Transportation Policy Board.

He could not be reached for comment.

Powell has served on the council since 2005, and previously served as Cedar Park's representative on the Capital Area Council of Governments.

The election will be May 12, and early voting will begin April 30.
