Silver Spoon Caf owners James and Jennifer Gehring transformed the former soup and sandwich shop into a homestyle Americana hangout after taking ownership in February 2011.

Gehring said he redesigned the menu to feature the food he loves to make and what people like to eat.

"We came in and added fried foods and burgers to the menu," he said. "It's almost like a totally different restaurant, but with the same name."

The Silver Spoon Cafe was first located on West Willis Street, but after two months, Gehring said the restaurant outgrew the space and moved to the spot on South US 183, next to Hill Country Feed and Supply.

"Business is better at this location, but it goes up and down," he said. "It's the kind of place people come and eat, sit around talking. You feel like you're at home."

The menu features burgers, salads, hot sandwiches, wraps and Gehring's top seller, chicken-fried steak. Children eat free on Mondays, and every Friday there is an all-you-can-eat fried catfish special all day.

Gehring said after a slow holiday season typical for small, local restaurants, he will continue to rebrand the Silver Spoon Cafe as a weekday lunch and dinner destination serving homestyle meals made from scratch.
