A cold front is predicted to move through South Central Texas beginning Dec. 22, just in time for the Christmas holidays. Morning temperatures are anticipated to drop below freezing throughout the region, and temperatures may remain below freezing for several days. Freeze warnings and wind chill advisories are likely for the New Braunfels area, according to the National Weather Service.
NBU encourages members of the community to prepare for possible freezing temperatures by protecting faucets, outdoor pipes and pipes in unheated areas with pipe insulation as well as covering vents around the foundation and draining irrigation water supply lines.
"As we prepare for the approaching cold temperatures, NBU offers many tips and videos on our website, nbutexas.com, to help customers stay prepared," said Melissa C. Krause, NBU's chief strategic communications and security officer. “We want to remind everyone to pay close attention to the four P's: people, pets, plants, and pipes. In addition, with family and friends at home for the holidays, the importance of electric and water conservation should be highlighted. Taking small steps with adjusting the thermostat and minimizing appliance use can help keep the utility bill manageable.”
New Braunfels residents can also prepare for the cold weather by knowing where their main water shutoff valve is located in case of a leak. Instructions on steps to take if a leak is suspected can be found at nbutexas.com/winter-freeze-tips.
Extreme weather conditions may cause electrical and water outages. NBU’s outage maps and electric outage notification systems can be found at nbutexas.com/report-an-outage.
