The city of New Braunfels will close nonessential facilities in anticipation of winter weather expected to impact the area beginning Feb. 2.

Comal County offices, New Braunfels City Hall, the New Braunfels Public Library, the Westside Community Center, Das Rec, and the New Braunfels Utilities lobbies and drive-thru will all be closed Feb. 3.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service expect cold temperatures to last through Feb. 5 with a 90% chance of precipitation throughout the day Feb. 3 that could lead to as much as a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation.

Ahead of the winter weather conditions, city, county and Texas Department of Transportation street crews have begun preparations to lay down gravel and de-icing agents on area roads and bridges. Should roads begin to close due to icy conditions, residents can find updates on city and state websites that track road conditions.

The city has also partially activated the emergency operations center where staff will monitor weather conditions over the coming days, and NBU announced in a press release that staff are prepared to assist with any emergency operations if needed.

Police, fire, EMS, public works and solid waste will continue operations as normal but may be subject to change depending on road conditions.

The New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Department’s Daddy Daughter Dance scheduled to take place at Wursthalle Feb. 4 and 5 has been postponed, as has a meeting of the animal services advisory board previously scheduled for Feb. 3.

Though the Electric Reliability Council of Texas does not anticipate a repeat of the rolling outages that were caused by Winter Storm Uri in 2021, ice accumulation, strong winds or fallen trees could cause some temporary outages, according to a release from NBU.

Residents can report a downed power line to the NBU by calling 830-629-4628, and the city is prepared to open a warming center should that become necessary.

Additionally, NBU has begun working to ensure water and power infrastructure are equipped to handle winter weather, and the company is in the process of creating an emergency preparedness plan to submit to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
