The new site of NB Housing Partners and First Footing shelter opened Jan. 15. The shelter and community resource center is the program’s first permanent crisis housing space.

The background

From the creation of the First Footing program in February 2021 until the opening of the new center, NB Housing Partners leased hotel space for individuals experiencing homelessness.

In the first two years of the program, the demand for crisis housing grew, said Kellie Stallings, executive director of NB Housing Partners.

“As long as our community continues to grow ... we also know that issues like homelessness will continue to grow as well,” Stallings said. “So, in this more permanent site now, we were able to expand the number that we can serve at any one time.”

The details

NB Housing Partners entered into a long-term lease with the city of New Braunfels for the new center, which used to be a fire station.

Currently, the shelter can house up to 42 adults. Stallings said those seeking shelter are individuals committed to working toward their own permanent housing as well as people seeking shelter from the weather.

The drop-in center resources include health care services and case management. Stallings said they can help reconnect individuals with benefits or identification documents.

“Right now, when someone comes to get help, we are first spending the time getting to know their story, and that way we can help see not only do we have space but also is there someone else in the community or nearby in the community who may have the resources that better fit this person's needs?” Stallings said. “So it cuts down on the burden [of] the person asking for help.”

NB Housing Partners would like to eventually build and renovate on the site again to expand resources and accommodate more people. By expanding, the shelter could fit 65-70 people.

The First Footing program shelter and community resource center is located at 4120 Loop 337, New Braunfels. Those seeking housing can visit the shelter or call NB Housing Partners at 830-272-5020. Interested volunteers can contact [email protected].
