In May, Hope Hospice pledged an annual scholarship that will total $10,000 over four academic years to support nursing students at Texas Lutheran University.

The scholarship program will also include advocacy for education about the importance of hospice care, according to a press release.

“At Hope Hospice, we like to tell our story and educate on what we can do to address any myths or misconceptions about hospice that the student will experience in the clinical setting or the workplace,” Hope Hospice CEO Nickie Drummond said in an email. “We understand the time spent in school may be the only time [students] truly experience hospice and how hospice can assist and positively impact the patients' lives. The compassionate care they will see in hospice will translate to any health care setting they will find themselves in.”

In addition to TLU’s nursing program at its main campus in Seguin, the university also offers an accelerated program in New Braunfels.

In June 2020, TLU launched its accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing program in partnership with Resolute Health Hospital, according to the university.

Students are able to earn their nursing degree in 16 months and attend classes, labs and clinicals at the hospital.

“TLU has created a nursing program, within our service area, to support the overwhelming needs and vacancies within our health care community,” Drummond said in the email. “So, we want to ensure that we, too, are supporting TLU and our nursing students with the opportunity for the betterment of themselves and our community by helping fund their education.”
